How Can We Expect Students To Love Reading?

If we forced kids to play boring video games all through school and into University they probably would hate video games when they graduate.

If we forced kids to play boring sports all through school and into University they probably would hate sports when they graduate.

How can we expect kids students to love reading when we’ve forced them to read boring textbooks all their lives?

It’s great how sometimes the shortest blog posts contain the most salient messages. I couldn’t agree more Jeph. I’m not one who thinks that graphic novels should necessarily qualify as literature, but there are TONS of great fiction and non-fiction books out there that would really get kids interested in reading.

Part of the problem is teachers who reteach the same books over and over again, but the real problem is the governments who make it difficult for teachers to select new and interesting books and limit curriculum options. I sure hope that my kids develop a love of reading, I know I’ll be doing everything I can to promote it.
