Realize: How Not To Market a University

Lately I’ve noticed several different University of Regina billboards around Regina. Now if you immediately jump to “but Jeph you saw them and remembered them.  Isn’t that a great billboard?!?” Hardly. Not all exposure is good exposure.  Do you think BP’s oil spill was “good” exposure for the company?

The University of Regina iPhone App

Iusask appI don’t think most companies and organizations in Saskatchewan need an app.  We’re still pretty far behind the technology curve.  So if you think developing an app as your next strategic move, I’d look into it a little deeper.  One organization that does have an app is the U of S, so obviously we need to ask the question; why doesn’t the University of Regina have one?

Before you go developing god knows what kind of app for your company make sure you ask the difficult questions along the way.

Why do we need an app?  What incentive is there to downloading our app?  Will an app make it easier for people to _________(fill in the blank) at the University of Regina?  Is it just our website in a different format?  Who is responsible for updating it?  Is our app worth talking about?

7 Lessons Learned Working with the University of Regina Students’ Union

1.  Just because something is right, legal, or completely logical doesn’t make it true. During the project one of our goals was to stay out of a legal battle, this meant abiding by their rules, even if we knew they were in violation of some of our basic rights.  Sometimes it is best to swallow your pride for the greater good.

2.  I believe anyone can work a ridiculous amount of hours in a week without getting burnt out, the key is to work on something* you are very passionate about. *(It is much easier to be passionate about something you believe in, not something you were told to believe in)

3.  Being a part of a large project that is actually helping people is one of the most exhilarating experiences in the World.

4.  I got more frustrated than I had ever been in my life and learned that I had more self control than I thought.  When you step out of your comfort zone you learn much about yourself.

5.  You are only as strong as your team.  The four individuals on the URSU executive are some of the brightest students at the University and will be

The Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), a National Embarrassment

I just finished working with the University of Regina Students’ Union.  They were holding a referendum on continued membership in the Canadian Federation of Students, I was the chair of the ‘No Campaign’.

Here are the facts that I used to back up my campaign:

Nine separate legal proceedings plus a pile of other legal filings, the CFS vs. other Student Unions from across Canada.

13 Schools from across Canada circulated petitions in 2009 to de-federate from the CFS

The CFS loses a court appeal and the University of Saskatchewan membership

The Post Graduate Students’ Society at McGill University vote to leave the CFS.

Unions Across the Country are Trying to Escape the CFS

“If students at schools still affiliated with the CFS didn’t yet have a reason to leave the organization, they do now.”

CBC News coverage on the CFS

Sounds too ridiculous to be true right?  Because the process to de-federate is so long and difficult, the CFS has plenty of time to prepare for these referendums.  Like clock work during our campaign against the CFS they flew in at least fifteen additional people who were pro-CFS from all across Canada.

In addition to them
